A standard king size cigarette box (a 20-stick flip-top pack) measures about 88 x 55 x 22 mm, or roughly 3.5 x 2.2 x 0.9 inches. A 100s pack is taller at around 100 x 55 x 22 mm, and slim packs are narrower and thinner. A carton holds 10 packs and measures roughly 275 x 90 x 45 mm (about 10.8 x 3.5 x 1.8 inches).
Exact sizes vary a little between brands and countries, but the pack is built around the cigarettes, so once you know the stick length and diameter, the box size follows.

Dimensions are given as height x width x depth. Treat them as typical figures for planning, not exact specs for any one brand. If you’re producing packaging, always measure your actual product and test a sample.

How a 20-stick pack is arranged
Most 20-cigarette packs hold the sticks in three rows, usually 7, 6 and 7. That arrangement is why the pack is about 55 mm wide and 22 mm deep: seven 8 mm cigarettes side by side, three rows deep, plus the foil wrap and board. Slim packs use the same idea with thinner sticks, so the box gets narrower and slimmer.
In most countries, 20 is the standard pack count, and it’s the legal minimum in places like the US and EU. Some markets also sell packs of 10, 14 or 25.
Common cigarette box styles
Flip-top (hard pack)
The most familiar style. A rigid paperboard pack with a hinged lid and an inner frame (the collar) that holds the lid shut. Inside, the cigarettes are wrapped in a foil or paper inner liner.
Soft pack
A paper pack without a hinged lid. The top is torn open. Soft packs are slightly more compact and lighter.
Slide (sleeve) box
A tray that slides out of an outer sleeve, often used for premium or gift packaging. See our sleeve cigarette boxes.
Rigid and engraved cases
Thicker rigid boxes and cases are made for collectors, gift sets, cigars and premium herbal products, sometimes with engraving, foil or embossing. Have a look at our engraved cigarette boxes.
Materials for cigarette boxes
- Paperboard: usually 14 to 18 pt SBS, which folds crisply and prints sharply.
- Kraft board: for a natural, eco-friendly look.
- Cardboard and corrugated: used for cartons and shipping cases. See our cardboard cigarette boxes.
- Rigid board: for premium cases and gift sets.
Common finishes include matte or gloss lamination, foil stamping, spot UV and embossing or debossing.
Rules to check before printing
Tobacco packaging is one of the most regulated packaging categories in the world. Depending on where the product is sold, there can be rules on health warning size and placement, plain or standardized packaging, minimum pack counts, tax stamps and what branding is allowed. These vary a lot by country and can change, so check the current rules for every market before you design a pack. We print to the specification you provide.
How to size a custom cigarette box
- Start with the stick length and diameter.
- Decide the count and arrangement (for example, 20 sticks in a 7-6-7 layout).
- Add space for the inner foil or liner and any inner frame.
- Add the board thickness on each side.
- Make a sample and test the fit and the lid closure before the full run.
